12. Sensation of a Foreign Object: The Phantom Presence
The diverticulum, or pouch, that develops in the lining of the esophagus can cause this sensation. As it fills with food particles or liquids, it can press against other structures in the throat, giving the feeling that something is stuck. Over time, this sensation can be more pronounced, especially after meals or when lying down.
Constantly feeling as though there’s an obstruction in your throat can be mentally taxing. The sensation can lead to heightened anxiety, especially in social situations where eating or drinking is involved. Individuals may find themselves avoiding certain foods or even declining social invitations due to the fear of exacerbating this sensation.(12)
