One of the unique challenges associated with BMS is the notable absence of physical signs. Most ailments come with visible symptoms, making them easier to diagnose and comprehend. Not so with BMS. Despite the intense burning sensation that patients describe, the mouth often appears perfectly healthy upon examination.
This lack of physical manifestations can be both puzzling and frustrating. Patients might wonder if their pain is being taken seriously when nothing seems amiss upon a visual examination. It’s not uncommon for them to undergo numerous dental and medical evaluations in search of answers, with each test coming back inconclusive.
The lack of physical signs is a double-edged sword. While it’s reassuring to know there are no visible lesions or abnormalities, it also makes diagnosis a process of elimination. Healthcare providers must rule out other conditions with similar symptoms before arriving at a BMS diagnosis. (6)
