Fact 12: Surgical Alternatives
While many find relief with lifestyle changes and medications, some continue to struggle with GERD symptoms. For such individuals, surgical options might be the way forward. These aren’t first-line treatments but come into the picture when other measures fall short.
The most common surgical procedure for GERD is called fundoplication. It involves wrapping the top of the stomach around the LES to strengthen it, prevent acid reflux, and repair a hiatal hernia. The surgery has a good success rate and can offer long-term relief for many.
Another innovative surgical solution is the LINX device. It consists of a ring of tiny magnetic beads that’s wrapped around the junction of the stomach and esophagus. This ring strengthens the LES, preventing acid from refluxing into the esophagus, but still allows food to pass into the stomach. (12)
