Fact 9: Surgical Interventions
Surgery, for many conditions, is typically a last resort, and gastroparesis is no exception. While lifestyle modifications and medications can successfully manage many cases, certain severe or non-responsive situations call for surgical measures.
When the stomach is severely impaired, a direct approach might be considered: bypassing the stomach entirely. Jejunostomy tubes, implanted into the small intestine, allow nutritional solutions to be introduced directly, ensuring the body receives the nutrients it needs without burdening the beleaguered stomach.
This innovative treatment involves implanting a device similar to a pacemaker. It emits mild electrical pulses to stimulate the stomach muscles, promoting better movement and function. While not a panacea, many patients report significant symptom reduction post-implantation. (9)
