Fact 10: Global Prevalence
Colorectal cancer isn’t constrained by geographical boundaries. Its footprint spans the globe, making it a pressing concern for global health agencies. As of recent data, it ranks third in terms of incidence but second in cancer-related deaths worldwide, underscoring its global impact.
Regional disparities, however, exist. Developed nations, owing to their aging population and certain lifestyle choices, often exhibit higher incidence rates. North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, notably Japan, see a higher burden of this disease. This doesn’t discount the disease’s presence in developing nations, but the patterns of prevalence distinctly vary.
Dietary patterns, especially high consumption of red and processed meats coupled with low fiber intake, prevalent in Western diets, have been linked to increased colorectal cancer risk. Similarly, sedentary lifestyles and obesity, more commonplace in developed regions, further accentuate this risk. (10)
