It might come as a surprise, but not all hemorrhoids are created equal. Broadly, they’re categorized into two main types: internal and external. The distinction? Their location. Internal hemorrhoids are concealed, tucked away inside the rectum. You might not even know you have them unless they cause bleeding or prolapse.
External hemorrhoids, as the name suggests, form under the skin around the anus. These are visible and often painful, especially if they thrombose or form blood clots. Due to their location, they can become irritated easily, leading to discomfort.
It’s important to distinguish between the two because the approach to treatment can vary. While internal ones might be silent sufferers, they can lead to complications if left unchecked.
