11. Beans and Legumes: Protein-Rich but Problematic
Beans and legumes, such as lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans, are an excellent source of plant-based protein but can be challenging for individuals with ulcerative colitis to digest. Their high fiber content and gas-producing properties can lead to increased bloating, cramping, and discomfort, particularly during flare-ups.
If you find that beans and legumes contribute to your symptoms, consider reducing your intake or experimenting with different varieties to find those that are more easily tolerated. You can also try soaking and cooking beans and legumes thoroughly to help break down some of the fibers and make them more digestible.
For alternative protein sources, opt for lean meats, fish, or poultry, or explore other plant-based options like tofu, tempeh, or seitan. (11)
