One of the more recognizable symptoms of AIH is jaundice, which manifests as a yellowing of the skin and eyes. It’s a clear sign that the liver is struggling.
The liver produces bile, a fluid crucial for digestion. When the liver’s function is compromised, bilirubin—a yellow compound—starts accumulating in the bloodstream, leading to the noticeable yellow tint.
Jaundice, in the context of AIH, can also be accompanied by itching. This is due to bile salts accumulating under the skin, causing irritation. Moreover, stools might appear pale, and urine can turn darker, further indicating a liver malfunction.(2)
