Fact 4: Age and Constipation
Age is more than just a number when it comes to constipation. As we progress through life’s stages, our bodies undergo various metabolic and physiological changes. The digestive process, in particular, might not remain as sprightly as it was during our younger days, leading to an increased susceptibility to constipation.
Firstly, with age, the metabolism tends to slow down. This reduced metabolic rate can impact how food is broken down and processed in the system. As a result, the movement of food residues through the large intestine may be slower, increasing the chance of constipation.
Coupled with metabolic changes are lifestyle shifts. Older adults might not be as physically active as they once were. This decrease in activity can further contribute to constipation. Regular movement and exercise have been shown to stimulate intestinal activity, facilitating smoother bowel movements.(4)
