9. Quality of Life and its Relationship with Life Expectancy
Life expectancy isn’t just about the number of years one lives; it’s equally about the quality of those years. For LGS patients, the quality of life can vary significantly based on factors like seizure control, cognitive abilities, and the presence of other health conditions.
A high-quality life, marked by meaningful interactions, accomplishments, and overall well-being, can inadvertently extend life expectancy. A happy, fulfilled individual is often more resilient, better able to cope with medical challenges, and less prone to complications arising from stress or neglect.
To enhance the quality of life for LGS patients, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. This encompasses medical treatment, psychological support, community involvement, and enriching experiences. Together, these factors not only make the journey with LGS more bearable but can also positively influence life expectancy. (9)
