Occasional hiccups are something everyone experiences, but persistent hiccups might indicate an underlying issue like PUD. This involuntary spasm of the diaphragm can become more than just an annoyance if it persists.
While the exact connection isn’t always clear, it’s believed that irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining due to the ulcer might stimulate the phrenic nerves, leading to hiccups.
Consuming large meals, carbonated beverages, or sudden temperature changes in food can trigger hiccups. In the context of PUD, these factors, combined with the ulcer’s presence, can make the symptom more pronounced.(15)
