4. Itchy Skin Rashes: The Surface Distress
While deep tissue swelling is a hallmark of angioedema, surface symptoms can sometimes accompany it. Itchy rashes, often mistaken for other skin conditions, can be a manifestation of this underlying disorder, indicating the body’s heightened immune response.
These rashes are often red, raised, and intensely itchy. Unlike common rashes, those associated with angioedema are often larger, more diffuse, and might present alongside other symptoms. They serve as an external alarm of the internal inflammatory process underway.
Histamine release, a common reaction to allergens, plays a significant role here. When the body encounters a trigger, it releases histamine, leading to the dilation of blood vessels and the subsequent itchiness and redness observed on the skin. (4)
