11. The Elusive Genesis: Unraveling the Causes of NMOSD
Although a great deal is known about how NMOSD behaves, the exact cause of this disorder remains enigmatic. As an autoimmune disease, the immune system misfires, attacking the body’s own tissues. Yet, the triggers for this misdirection are less clear and likely multifaceted.
Genetic predisposition seems to play a role, with some studies pointing to specific gene variants linked with an increased likelihood of developing NMOSD. These genetic factors may render an individual more susceptible to the disease, although by themselves, they are not enough to cause NMOSD.
Environmental factors may also influence NMOSD onset. These could include infections, as some research has suggested that certain viral infections might incite an aberrant immune response leading to NMOSD. However, these connections are yet to be definitively proven.
Hormonal influences, particularly those related to sex hormones, are another area of interest. NMOSD is more common in women, a trend common to many autoimmune diseases. The exact role of hormones in NMOSD pathogenesis remains a subject of ongoing research.
