6. The Social Stigma: NPC’s Psychological Toll
The weight of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) extends beyond the physical realm into the psychological domain. The stigmatization that accompanies a diagnosis of cancer is often amplified in the case of NPC. Why? NPC can lead to facial deformities and changes in voice, which become noticeable and can result in social isolation.
Interestingly, the psychological impact can have physiological consequences. Elevated stress levels can impair immune function, a fact that has specific importance for NPC given its already complex relationship with the immune system. What’s even more intriguing is that these psychological stressors can directly or indirectly influence the efficacy of cancer treatments.
Traditionally, the focus of NPC management has been on medical interventions. Yet, there is a growing awareness within the medical community about the need for holistic care, which encompasses emotional and psychological well-being. Doctors are increasingly recommending psychological counseling as a complementary treatment approach. (6)
