Option 4: Methotrexate
Methotrexate is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) and is often considered the gold standard for treating RA. It works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase, which plays a role in the immune system’s inflammatory response.
This medication can be taken orally or administered via injection and is typically prescribed as a once-weekly dose. Methotrexate has been shown to reduce inflammation, slow joint damage, and improve overall function in people with RA.
Although methotrexate is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects such as nausea, mouth sores, and liver abnormalities. To minimize these side effects, your healthcare provider may recommend supplementing with folic acid or folinic acid, as well as monitoring blood tests to ensure the medication is working effectively and safely.
It’s essential to discuss any concerns or side effects with your healthcare provider, as adjustments to your treatment plan may be necessary. In some cases, combining methotrexate with other DMARDs or biologic agents can enhance its effectiveness and reduce the risk of side effects. (4)
