T-cell costimulatory blocking agents, such as abatacept, are a type of biologic medication that works by interrupting the activation of T-cells, immune cells responsible for inflammation and joint damage in RA. This medication is typically administered through intravenous infusion or subcutaneous injection and can be used alone or in combination with other DMARDs.
Abatacept has been shown to reduce inflammation, slow joint damage, and improve overall function in people with RA who have not responded adequately to traditional DMARDs or TNF inhibitors. However, as with other biologic medications, there is an increased risk of infections and other side effects.
Regular monitoring and communication with your healthcare team are crucial to ensure the medication is working effectively and safely. If you experience any side effects or have concerns about your treatment, it’s important to discuss them with your healthcare provider, as adjustments to your treatment plan may be necessary. (9)
