Symptom 8. Congenital Syphilis: Pregnancy Complications
Congenital syphilis occurs when a pregnant woman with syphilis passes the infection to her unborn child. This can lead to severe complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death.
• Effects on the Baby: Infants born with congenital syphilis may experience a range of health problems, such as low birth weight, premature birth, organ damage, and developmental delays.
• Prevention and Prenatal Care: Pregnant women should be tested for syphilis during their first prenatal visit and again during the third trimester if they’re at high risk. If a pregnant woman tests positive for syphilis, prompt treatment with antibiotics can help prevent congenital syphilis and protect the baby’s health. (8)
