Tip 10. Don’t Neglect Oral Care: The Overlooked Aspect of Post-operative Care
Although it might seem unrelated, maintaining good oral hygiene after thyroidectomy surgery is crucial. Following your operation, you may experience dry mouth due to changes in hormone levels or side-effects from medications. Dry mouth not only feels uncomfortable but can also increase the risk of oral infections, gum disease, and tooth decay.
Keeping your mouth clean and hydrated can help prevent these issues. Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Consider using an alcohol-free mouthwash to further clean your mouth without causing dryness. (10)
