Symptom 11: Cyanosis
Cyanosis, a bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, can be a sign of severe asthma or an asthma emergency. This discoloration is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood, which can occur when asthma symptoms are not adequately managed.
Cyanosis is typically seen around the lips, fingertips, and nail beds, and it may be accompanied by other severe symptoms, such as extreme shortness of breath, chest pain, and confusion. If you or someone you know experiences cyanosis in conjunction with asthma symptoms, seek immediate medical attention, as this can be a life-threatening situation.
Proper management of asthma, including following a prescribed treatment plan and having an asthma action plan in place, can help prevent severe asthma episodes and the development of cyanosis. (11)
