Disease 12. Blepharitis: The Eyelid Irritant
Blepharitis is a common eye condition characterized by inflammation of the eyelids, often affecting the area where the eyelashes grow. Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, crusting or flaking at the base of the eyelashes, and a gritty sensation in the eyes.
Causes of blepharitis can include bacterial infection, clogged oil glands at the base of the eyelashes, or a reaction to certain medications or allergens. Treatment for blepharitis typically involves maintaining proper eyelid hygiene, using warm compresses, and applying antibiotic or steroid eye drops or ointments as prescribed by an eye care professional.
Regular eye exams and adherence to proper eyelid hygiene practices can help prevent blepharitis and minimize discomfort if the condition arises. (10)
