Pinguecula is a benign growth that appears as a yellowish, slightly raised bump on the conjunctiva, the clear tissue that covers the white part of the eye. It typically forms near the cornea, on the side of the eye closest to the nose. Pinguecula is usually harmless and often caused by long-term exposure to sunlight, wind, or dust.

Though pinguecula is not typically painful, it can sometimes cause discomfort, redness, or irritation. Some individuals may also feel a foreign body sensation or dryness in the affected eye. In more severe cases, the pinguecula can become inflamed, a condition known as pingueculitis.

Treatment for pinguecula depends on the severity of the symptoms. In many cases, no treatment is necessary, and the condition can be managed by wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes from UV exposure and using artificial tears to alleviate dryness. If the growth becomes inflamed or causes significant discomfort, an eye care professional may prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops or ointments. In rare cases, surgical removal may be recommended for persistent or severe pinguecula. (12)
