Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent tissue that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. This condition can be caused by various factors, including bacterial or viral infections, allergies, or irritants like smoke or chemicals.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis may include redness, itching, discharge, tearing, and sensitivity to light. The mode of treatment depends on the cause of the inflammation. For bacterial conjunctivitis, antibiotic eye drops or ointments are typically prescribed. Viral conjunctivitis usually resolves on its own, but over-the-counter eye drops and cold compresses can help alleviate symptoms. Allergic conjunctivitis may be treated with antihistamine eye drops or oral antihistamines.

Maintaining proper eye hygiene, avoiding the sharing of personal items like towels and cosmetics, and washing hands frequently can help prevent the spread of infectious conjunctivitis. Regular eye exams can also help identify and treat conjunctivitis early, reducing discomfort and potential complications. (4)
