Type 4: Carcinoid Tumors of the Stomach
Carcinoid tumors often release hormones directly into the bloodstream. One noticeable symptom resulting from this is a sudden flushing of the skin. This isn’t your typical blush or the flush post a workout. It’s a sudden reddening of the face and neck, sometimes accompanied by a warm sensation. This flushing might last just a few minutes, but its recurrent nature can be indicative of the underlying tumor.
Another consequence of the hormones released by carcinoid tumors is chronic diarrhea. Patients might experience frequent, watery stools, often without any dietary triggers. This isn’t just an occasional upset stomach but a persistent condition. Over time, this can lead to dehydration, weight loss, and electrolyte imbalances, further complicating the patient’s health.
In some cases, the hormones might affect the bronchial muscles, leading to wheezing or shortness of breath. This can be misdiagnosed as asthma or other respiratory conditions. However, when paired with other symptoms like flushing and diarrhea, it points towards carcinoid tumors.
Patients might also notice an unusual acceleration in their heartbeat. This isn’t linked to exertion or anxiety but can be random. It’s more than just the heart racing momentarily. It’s a palpable increase, sometimes accompanied by a fluttering sensation or palpitations, which can be disconcerting. (4)
