Symptom 13. Increased Urination at Night: A Sign Not to Be Ignored
Frequent trips to the bathroom at night might seem like a bother related to aging or a sign of a urinary tract issue. However, this symptom, known as nocturia, could be an early warning sign of heart trouble, particularly heart failure.
In heart failure, the heart struggles to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. This inefficiency can lead to the accumulation of fluid in the tissues. During the day, while you are upright, this excess fluid can cause swelling in your lower extremities. But when you lie down to sleep, the fluid can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and processed by the kidneys, leading to increased urine production and, consequently, the need for more frequent nighttime urination.
Nocturia can also be caused by certain medications used to treat heart conditions. Diuretics, or water pills, are often prescribed to manage fluid buildup in heart failure. These medications increase urine output, which can result in more frequent trips to the bathroom.
While increased urination at night can be a sign of various health conditions, if you notice a significant change in your bathroom habits—particularly if it’s accompanied by other heart trouble symptoms—it’s important to bring this to the attention of your healthcare provider.
