Symptom 8. Persistent Cough or Wheezing: More Than a Winter Cold
Coughs and wheezing are typically associated with colds, allergies, or respiratory conditions like asthma. But did you know they could also be symptoms of heart trouble? When a cough persists or when the coughed-up mucus is pink or white and frothy, it could signal that the heart isn’t functioning as it should.
If your heart is unable to meet your body’s blood demands, fluid may start to accumulate in the lungs. This fluid buildup can cause wheezing and a persistent, hacking cough. The cough can often worsen at night due to fluid accumulation in the lungs when lying down.
This is a common symptom of heart failure. If you find yourself coughing persistently and producing white or pink frothy mucus, seek medical attention promptly. Coupled with other symptoms on this list, this coughing could indicate a serious heart condition. (8)
