Symptom 6. New Problems with Words in Speaking or Writing: The Language Barrier in Dementia
One of the salient signs of dementia is a noticeable decline in language skills. This deterioration typically involves difficulties in finding the right words, following or participating in a conversation, and understanding written or spoken language.
In the early stages of dementia, the person might stop mid-conversation, unable to recall how to finish a sentence, or they might struggle to find the right word. They might also begin to repeat themselves or substitute common words with inappropriate ones, making their speech or writing hard to understand.
Over time, these language problems become more pronounced. The person might regularly use incorrect words, making their speech or writing incomprehensible.
They might also find it challenging to engage in conversations or understand complex sentences. Reading and writing, too, can become increasingly difficult tasks. (6)
