When the body encounters threats like infections, lymph nodes often swell as they produce more white blood cells. In the context of PBL, this swelling is due to the rapid multiplication of malignant cells within the lymph nodes. The nodes, typically small and bean-shaped, can grow to noticeable sizes.

Most of us are familiar with the lymph nodes located in the neck, but they’re scattered throughout the body. In PBL, nodes in the armpits, groin, or even abdomen might enlarge. This isn’t the typical swelling associated with a minor infection; it’s persistent and doesn’t diminish on its own.

Interestingly, while the swelling signifies an internal battle, it’s typically painless. The lack of discomfort can sometimes lead individuals to dismiss it as non-threatening. However, the consistency of the swelling — hard and fixed rather than soft and mobile — can distinguish it from regular inflammation.

The presence of swollen lymph nodes, especially in conjunction with other symptoms, paints a clearer picture of the body’s internal state. Though the nodes swell in response to multiple triggers, persistent enlargement without a clear cause can be a hallmark of PBL. (4)
