#7. Memory Loss and Amnesia: Forgetting the Details of the Injury
Memory loss, particularly amnesia surrounding the events of the injury, is a common symptom of a concussion. This memory loss can be short-term or long-term and may involve difficulty recalling specific details or entire events. In some cases, individuals may not even remember sustaining the head injury itself. (6)
It’s essential to be patient and gentle with yourself during the recovery process, as forcing the brain to remember can cause additional stress and hinder healing. Memory may gradually return as the brain recovers, but in some cases, the lost memories may never be regained. Persistent or worsening memory loss should be discussed with a medical professional to determine the appropriate course of action.
