Research points to a relationship between hypertension, or high blood pressure, and CAA. This link isn’t surprising given both conditions involve the blood vessels, but it’s an important consideration for those at risk or already dealing with CAA.

High blood pressure puts extra strain on blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the brain. Over time, this pressure can weaken the vessel walls, making them more susceptible to damage – the same type of damage seen in CAA.

While the exact role hypertension plays in CAA is still under investigation, the association between the two is hard to ignore. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease reported an increased prevalence of CAA in hypertensive patients.

Hypertension’s management could therefore play a significant role in CAA’s management. By controlling high blood pressure, one might be able to reduce the risk of CAA or slow its progression.

The link between hypertension and CAA offers a promising avenue for prevention and treatment. By exploring this connection further, we may be able to develop more effective strategies for managing both conditions. (11)
