Fact 12. Trouble with Communication: The Forgotten Words of Dementia
A significant behavioral problem associated with dementia is the progressive decline in communication skills. Individuals may experience difficulty finding the right words, participating in conversations, or even understanding what’s being said to them.
This trouble with communication is tied to the degenerative nature of dementia, which affects areas of the brain responsible for language and comprehension. A person may forget words, use incorrect words, or resort to nonsensical language. They may also lose track of conversations or misunderstand instructions.
Given the centrality of communication in human life, this aspect of dementia can be particularly challenging. It can lead to feelings of frustration and isolation, not just for the person with dementia but also for their caregivers and loved ones. (12)
