Symptom 4: Fatigue
In the landscape of SPMS symptoms, fatigue stands as a colossal challenge. Unlike ordinary tiredness, the fatigue experienced in SPMS is an overwhelming sense of exhaustion that doesn’t necessarily improve with rest. This symptom can be persistent and pervasive, affecting both physical and cognitive functions.
Physically, fatigue can make it difficult to perform even simple tasks. It may start as a heavy feeling in the legs that makes walking seem like an uphill climb. As the fatigue progresses, it can affect the entire body, making every movement feel like wading through thick mud.
Cognitively, fatigue can manifest as a clouding of mental functions. This may involve difficulties in concentration, decision-making, or memory. The mental exhaustion can be so intense that even simple cognitive tasks such as reading a book or carrying on a conversation can be draining.
It’s also worth noting that fatigue in SPMS can be influenced by various factors. These include heat sensitivity, poor sleep, physical exertion, and even emotional stress. Identifying and managing these triggers can go a long way in managing fatigue effectively. (4)
