Possible Complications.
Because of the rapid and dangerous nature of CO poisoning, it can be complicated by long-term neurological and cardiac damage. The following neurological signs may appear:
- Chronic migraines;
- Seizures;
- Motor coordination disorders, paralysis;
- Memory or attention disorders;
- Dementia;
- Behavioural changes (aggressiveness, violence);
- Apathy and depression;
- Parkinsonism, which is characterized by tremors, stiffness and slow movement;
- Difficulty concentrating;
- Hearing problems (hypoacusis);
- Language problems (aphasia).
Exposure to carbon monoxide can also increase myocardial ischemia in people with coronary artery disease.
When exposure to CO is low and chronic, it can also have serious consequences on the fetus, such as developmental (weight, height) and intellectual development disorders or even fetal death or miscarriage.
