Treatment.
The first and most logical thing to do is to remove the patient from the source of the carbon monoxide and seek medical attention. Primary medical treatment for CO poisoning is inhalation of pure oxygen through a tight-fitting oxygen mask in an attempt to drive out the carbon monoxide fixed to the hemoglobin and allow the oxygenation of the cells. If the person’s condition is more serious, the doctor may prescribe Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). This treatment consists of placing the patient in a closed box where they receive pressurized oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is very effective in reducing the risk of late damage. This treatment is recommended:
- In the presence of severe clinical signs;
- In case of loss of consciousness;
- Life-threatening cardiorespiratory complications;
- Current chest pain;
- For pregnant women.
