9. Psychological Distress – The Invisible Burden
Psychological distress is a common yet often overlooked symptom in individuals with spasmodic torticollis. The constant battle with physical symptoms such as pain, muscle spasms, and difficulties in swallowing can take a toll on an individual’s mental health. This can manifest as anxiety, depression, and increased stress levels.
The unpredictable nature of spasmodic torticollis can create a sense of uncertainty and fear. Not knowing when the next spasm might hit or how severe it might be can be incredibly distressing. The physical symptoms of the disorder can disrupt daily life, leading to feelings of frustration and helplessness.
Psychological distress can also stem from the social implications of the disorder. Visible symptoms such as uncontrolled neck movements and shoulder asymmetry can lead to self-consciousness and social isolation. Difficulties in communication due to voice changes can further contribute to feelings of loneliness and despair.(9)
