Symptom 7: Possible Scarring Post-Healing
Even when a lesion resolves, it can sometimes leave a souvenir in its wake – a scar. This lingering reminder can be as distressing as the lesion itself, serving as a permanent testament to the tumultuous journey of someone with LyP.
The scars resultant from LyP aren’t just a result of the lesions; they often form due to the scratching and the trauma inflicted on the skin during particularly intense itch episodes. These scars can range from mild discolorations to more pronounced, raised scars, known as keloids.
Physical scars carry with them an emotional weight. For many, these scars are a constant reminder of past flare-ups and battles with LyP. They can lead to self-consciousness, especially if present on exposed parts of the body, affecting the self-esteem and mental well-being of an individual.
While some scarring might be inevitable, it’s essential to adopt preventive measures early on. This includes resisting the urge to scratch and seeking timely treatment for lesions. For existing scars, treatments range from topical creams and gels designed to lighten the scar to more invasive methods like laser therapy or dermabrasion.
Scars, like the other symptoms of LyP, require understanding and acceptance. While treatments can aid in minimizing their appearance, it’s essential to recognize the strength and resilience they represent in a patient’s journey with LyP. (7)
