Symptom 6: Muscle Atrophy
As PLS progresses, it isn’t uncommon for individuals to notice a certain degree of muscle atrophy. This essentially refers to a loss of muscle mass, resulting in muscles looking smaller or ‘wasted’.
The onset of muscle atrophy in PLS usually follows muscle weakness. As the muscles receive fewer signals from the brain due to damaged motor neurons, they are used less, leading to muscle wasting.
This symptom can affect a person’s physical appearance and function. The reduction in muscle mass can lead to difficulties in performing daily tasks, as the muscles simply do not have the strength they once did.
While it can be distressing to observe these physical changes, it’s crucial to remember that supportive interventions can help manage this symptom. These might include physiotherapy, nutritional advice, and sometimes assistive devices to help maintain independence. (6)
