Symptom 4. Breathing Difficulties: An Unseen Barrier in the Airways
Shortness of breath or breathing difficulties is another symptom that people with stage 3 thyroid cancer may experience. It’s an outcome of the growing tumor obstructing the windpipe, making it harder for air to pass through.
The thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, is in close proximity to the windpipe. When a tumor in the thyroid gland expands, it presses against the windpipe, narrowing its lumen. This narrowed passage impedes the flow of air, causing discomfort and difficulties while breathing.
Breathing difficulties might start as an occasional inconvenience, particularly evident when engaging in physically demanding activities. But as the tumor continues to grow, the discomfort can escalate, making it challenging to breathe even during rest or mild activities.
Being unable to breathe comfortably can be a highly distressing experience. It adds an extra layer of complexity to daily activities and can limit the individual’s physical capabilities.(4)
