Ascites, or the buildup of fluid in the abdomen, is another common sign of advanced cirrhosis. You might notice your belly gradually swelling over time, even if you haven’t gained weight elsewhere. This swelling, often accompanied by discomfort or even pain, is a signal that your liver is struggling. But what leads to this buildup of fluid?

Cirrhosis causes scarring in the liver, which impedes blood flow through the organ. This blockage increases pressure in the vein that carries blood from the intestines and spleen to the liver, a condition known as portal hypertension. As a result, proteins and fluids leak out of the liver and accumulate in the abdomen, causing ascites.

Ascites isn’t just a cosmetic concern. The fluid buildup can cause discomfort and make it difficult to breathe, especially when lying down. It can also lead to bacterial peritonitis, a serious infection that requires immediate medical attention. (4)
