Symptom 8. The Gradual Shift: Loss of Appetite and Weight
Another symptom that might fly under the radar is a loss of appetite and subsequent weight loss. Many factors can affect our appetite, from stress to changes in routine. However, a persistently low appetite, especially when coupled with unexplained weight loss, could signal cirrhosis. But why would liver damage affect your appetite?
The liver plays a crucial role in digestion. It produces bile, which helps break down fats and absorb fat-soluble vitamins. When the liver is damaged by cirrhosis, its ability to produce bile is compromised. As a result, you might find that you don’t enjoy eating as much as you used to. Foods, especially fatty foods, might seem less appealing or even cause discomfort after eating.
Over time, this loss of appetite can lead to weight loss. While losing a few pounds might not seem like a cause for concern, unexplained weight loss could be a sign of underlying health issues, including cirrhosis. Moreover, weight loss due to poor appetite can lead to malnutrition, further compromising your health. (8)
