Fact 11: Dementia Can Cause Personality and Behavior Changes
While cognitive symptoms are the hallmark of dementia, the condition can also cause significant changes in personality and behavior. These changes can be distressing for the individual and their loved ones, but understanding them as part of the disease can help manage them effectively.
Personality changes in dementia might include shifts in mood, such as increased irritability, apathy, or depression. An individual who was once outgoing and sociable might become withdrawn, while someone who was typically calm might display uncharacteristic aggression or agitation.
Behavior changes can include restlessness, wandering, repeating the same questions or activities, struggling with routine tasks, or exhibiting socially inappropriate behavior. These behaviors are often driven by confusion, fear, or frustration as the individual tries to make sense of their changing abilities and environment. (11)
