Fact 12: People with Dementia Can Still Experience Joy and Quality of Life
Dementia is undoubtedly a challenging condition, both for the individual living with it and their loved ones. However, it’s crucial to remember that people with dementia can still experience joy, connect with others, and maintain a quality of life.
Despite cognitive decline, individuals with dementia often retain their emotional memory, which means they remember how an experience made them feel even if they can’t remember the experience itself. This can create opportunities for joy and connection, whether through listening to a favorite piece of music, spending time in nature, or engaging in a cherished activity.
Quality of life in dementia is also strongly influenced by the care and support the individual receives. Respectful, person-centered care that focuses on the individual’s remaining abilities rather than their losses can significantly enhance their wellbeing. This includes promoting autonomy and choice whenever possible, providing opportunities for meaningful engagement, and ensuring physical comfort and safety. (12)
