3. Postnasal Drip – The Persistent Intruder
Postnasal drip is often the uninvited guest of nasal polyps, a symptom that seems to linger with no intention of leaving. It starts subtly, with a sensation akin to a trickle at the back of the throat. This feeling is often dismissed or mistaken for a residual effect of a recent cold or allergy.
As the drip persists, it becomes more than a mere nuisance. The constant need to clear one’s throat can become disruptive. It’s a sensation that’s both aggravating and embarrassing, especially in quiet rooms or social gatherings. The mucus buildup is not just uncomfortable but can also be the breeding ground for bacteria, leading to further complications.
In the third stage, the postnasal drip begins to take a toll on the throat. A chronic cough may develop, as the body attempts to clear the mucus. This cough can be dry and hacking or moist and productive. Either way, it can be strenuous, leading to soreness in the throat and an exhausted voice.
Ultimately, the persistence of postnasal drip can affect one’s quality of life. Sleep may be interrupted by bouts of coughing or the constant urge to swallow. Over time, the throat may become irritated and inflamed, a condition known as pharyngitis. The cycle of drip and cough can be difficult to break without addressing the underlying cause: the nasal polyps. (3)
