Behavioral Problems.
Children with autism may demonstrate behavior that seems unnatural or unusual, such as:
- Repeating the same actions over and over (rocking, twirling, hand-flapping);
- Constant moving and hyperactivity;
- Fixation on certain things;
- Specific routines or rituals (and getting upset if they are not followed);
- Extreme sensitivity to touch, light, and sound;
- Not taking part in pretend or make-believe play;
- Being fussy about food;
- Lack of coordination, clumsiness;
- Acting impulsively or aggressively (to themselves or others);
- Short attention span. [5]
Some children on the spectrum may tend to develop self-injurious behaviors, like banging their head against the ground or wall, biting themselves, or excessively rubbing or scratching their skin. If you have noticed such behavior in your child, be sure to seek medical attention, because self-injury is a very dangerous sign and requires intervention as soon as possible. [6]
