First and foremost, the decision to opt for surgery isn’t taken lightly. The inherent risks, like poor wound healing or increased susceptibility to bruises, make the surgical journey an arduous one. For instance, someone with EDS might have their skin stitches dissolve too quickly or not hold the wound together efficiently.
Anesthesia, too, poses unique challenges. Some individuals with EDS might be resistant to local anesthetics, meaning they might need larger doses. On the flip side, some might have adverse reactions to specific anesthetic agents. Therefore, thorough pre-surgical consultations become crucial, with detailed discussions about one’s EDS type and past medical history.
Now, post-operative care in EDS individuals warrants special attention. The healing process can be protracted, with scars being more visible or wounds reopening. This necessitates longer hospital stays and more intensive post-operative monitoring.
