The symptoms of epiglottitis can be swift and severe, making it imperative to recognize them as soon as possible. Patients often experience a sudden, severe sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and a high fever. The voice may become muffled, and there may be a noticeable stridor—a high-pitched sound heard during inhalation.

Drooling is another common symptom, resulting from the difficulty and pain associated with swallowing. In children, there may also be a preference for sitting up and leaning forward, as this position can make breathing easier when the airway is partially obstructed.

The speed at which these symptoms develop is one of the distinguishing features of epiglottitis. Unlike other respiratory conditions which might develop over several days, the symptoms of epiglottitis can worsen significantly in a matter of hours.

Given the rapid progression of the condition, any suspicion of epiglottitis should be treated as a medical emergency. Delaying treatment can lead to complete blockage of the airway, with potentially fatal consequences. (2)
