If not promptly and properly treated, epiglottitis can lead to a range of serious complications. The most immediate and severe is respiratory arrest, where the airway becomes completely blocked, leading to a lack of oxygen and, if not rapidly addressed, death.

Even with timely treatment, patients may experience complications. Pneumonia, a lung infection, can occur if bacteria from the infected epiglottis spread to the lungs. Other potential complications include cellulitis (a skin infection) or abscesses in the throat area.

Patients may also experience a condition known as septicemia or bacteremia, where the bacteria causing the epiglottitis spread to the bloodstream. This can lead to infections in other parts of the body and can be particularly serious.

These complications underscore the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of epiglottitis. With the right medical intervention, the risk of complications can be significantly reduced, leading to a better outcome for the patient. (7)
