When we think of diet’s impact on esophagitis, food often takes the spotlight, leaving beverages in the shadows. However, what you drink can be just as critical. Some drinks can exacerbate acid reflux, contribute to inflammation, or even directly irritate the esophageal lining.

Alcohol is a known offender. While moderate drinking may be tolerable for some, it relaxes the LES, paving the way for stomach acid to enter the esophagus. Carbonated drinks can be equally treacherous, as the gas can expand in your stomach, putting pressure on the LES.

Caffeine is another trigger for many people. Found not just in coffee but also in teas and some soft drinks, caffeine stimulates acid production. It can also interfere with the LES, making acid reflux and, consequently, esophagitis, more likely. (12)
