Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH) is a chronic sleep disorder that causes persistent excessive sleepiness. Unlike other sleep disorders, IH isn’t typically associated with disturbed nocturnal sleep or cataplexy, making it a unique cause of excessive sleeping.

The hallmark of IH is an insatiable need to sleep that isn’t alleviated by extended periods of sleep at night or daytime napping. Those suffering from IH may sleep for extraordinarily long periods at a time and have great difficulty waking up from sleep, both during the night and in the morning.

Even when awake, individuals with IH often experience what is known as sleep drunkenness – a prolonged period of grogginess and disorientation upon waking up. This can often interfere with work, school, and daily activities.

The exact cause of idiopathic hypersomnia is unknown, and this makes it a challenge to treat. The strategies often involve managing the symptoms and may include stimulant medications to help the patient stay awake during the day. (3)
