Symptom 10. Glucose Intolerance
Glucose intolerance, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, may be observed in some individuals with Fanconi syndrome. The impaired renal tubules’ inability to reabsorb glucose can lead to elevated blood sugar levels and potential insulin resistance.
Symptoms of glucose intolerance can include frequent urination, excessive thirst, blurred vision, and unexplained weight loss. If left untreated, glucose intolerance can progress to type 2 diabetes, which carries additional health risks and complications.
To address glucose intolerance in individuals with Fanconi syndrome, healthcare professionals may recommend lifestyle modifications, such as a balanced diet and regular exercise, to help regulate blood sugar levels. In some cases, medication may be prescribed to improve insulin sensitivity and control blood sugar levels.
Working closely with a healthcare professional and monitoring blood sugar levels regularly can help manage this symptom. It also may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in those affected by Fanconi syndrome. (8)
