Symptom 8. Acidosis
Acidosis is a condition characterized by an excessive amount of acid in the body fluids, often seen in individuals with Fanconi syndrome. The impaired renal tubules’ ability to reabsorb bicarbonate, a substance that helps regulate the body’s pH balance, can lead to the accumulation of acid in the blood and other body fluids.
Symptoms of acidosis may include rapid breathing, confusion, headache, and lethargy. If left untreated, acidosis can lead to serious health complications, such as organ damage, shock, and even death.
To address acidosis in individuals with Fanconi syndrome, healthcare professionals may recommend alkali therapy. It involves administering bicarbonate or other alkalinizing agents to help restore the body’s pH balance. Close monitoring and regular blood tests are crucial to ensure that acidosis is adequately managed and to adjust treatment as needed. (6)
